The story began well before the current internet days, back when digital messages were exchanged only between faculty and geeky students of technology universities. The date we’re talking to you about is September 19, 1982, in Pittsburgh, United States. This day was when a student at the traditional Carnegie Mellon University proposed the use of a symbol to mark digital messages that should not be taken seriously.
Meaning of emoji
Scott E. Fahlman, the student in question, invented the happy face 🙂 as a “joking marker“, after a false message about an alleged mercury spill left the entire student community at wit’s end.
From then on, the smiley-mania took hold, and it was incorporated by major communication companies, especially in Japan, where what we know today as an emoji began to be developed.
